steam powered radio

Helping Steampunk decide what to sound like since 2017

the steam powered radio available from here

(ok so it's not strictly steam powered and not strictly a radio)

Savigar, Charlotte

Nice funfair vibe. "Tales of new Albion," is the music to accompany the stories of Daren Callow.

Schweitzer, Curtis

Epic Danny Elfman type film score stuff. Could imagine this soundtracking airships.

Science Fiction Steampunk Band The Merchants of the Time Travelling Tea Trade

From New Zealand this lot. Have that Antipodean indie feel to them kind of like Frente etc. Claim to be from the Steampunk capital of the world which now I come to think of it I think I read a Guardian article about.

Sci-fi Romance and Mission 13

Independent folk band from LA apparetnly. Nice dark sound, worth checking out

Second Story, the

Something of a Celtic folk feel. . a bit of Circulus and a lot of wind instruments

Section Solo

"Mechanical Dreamland," is a project from a Pennsylvanian teenage producer. Quite dreamy with a bit of an industrial groove.

Set Prometheus Aflame

Steampunk Soul'd is a nice samply introduction. Fischerspooner rhythms and an element of computer games. Retronica is more of the same

Shayfer, James

"None of thee above," is kind of a modern day music hall track moonlighting as a show tune. "Carve a smile," is a big ballad. Red Room vol1 is well worth checking out.

Sheppard, Philip

"The Glass Cathedral," is melancholic neoclassical. An 18 year old meditative Cello piece. "Harrison's Chronometer," is a similar piece of extended classical ambient.

Shyft

"Synthetic Expeiments: Cing of Cogs," claims to be steampunk Gabba. It's quite nice atmospheric and creepy but I'm not sure whether it seems less gabba or steampunk

Sierra Victor

Proper quality steampunk 4 cogs out of 5. Possibly French quite a SGC feel.

Silek

"Steampunk," is a cluttered sub-Falco European hard rap track with samples that are more hit than miss. Perhaps Play it Again Sam.

Skerror

Scary dark ambient of the finest variety

Skip Shirey

Downright odd is the best description I can come up with. Perhaps imagine an eastern influenced acoustic Fatboy Slim

Skye, Luna

See wandering cellist probably

Slatter, Tom

"Some of the Creatures," is a fairly operatic intro to something that gets a bit rocky. Perfectly fine but no sound of cogs. Slightly Tull approach to eclectic music approaches with Bylth Power/Billy Bragg vocals.

Snak, Stoj

Stoj Snak has written the music to a computer game called "Chronology," from a site called steampowered.com! great minds etc. Promo artwork seems to suggest a time travelling gnome with goggles riding a flying penny farthing. One track even has a clock ticking as its rhyth track. Multiple Cogs and then some

Sound Storm

Symphonic metal from Italy. Look like Goths but have lots of cogs on the sleeve to Vertigo

SoundtrackUniverse

Alright harspichordy neo classical instrumental stuff

Sour Mash Hug Band

Flapper radio fare

Spiky

Appears to be linked to Void Factory, hard to tell what the difference is although Spiky is more sinister from my limited exposure. A but new-classical Goth.

Steam Carousel

Very cogworthy steam punk from Sweden. Very mechanical rhythms with some music box melody. Can't real fault it. Some of it feels almost mechanical medieval.

Steam Cats of Sekonza, the

Cogtastic in a slightly metal kind of way, but not very metal just a little. Very sinister.

Steamdoll Ellie and the Hoodwinkers

Russian Rockabilly steampunk with a strong swing vibe.

Steamgunk

A modern take on what steampunk might soundlike. Not bad. One for the Steampunk Disco. Builds the right atmosphere. I have to say I think these have got something going for them although I would like to see them programe that drum machine with punch cards.

Steampianist and Morbid-morsel

One of those musicbox driven bands with sinister childrens vocals, clockwork toys etc. 5 out of 5 cogs!

Steampowered Giraffe

At this years Asylum the queue for this lots signing was so longer I wouldn't have bothered joining if I was going to meet Justin (NMA) Eldritch (Sisters) and I would have um and ahed to meet Springsteen or Psycho himself.

Quite Marmite I undrestand. The better bits I thought sounded like poor mans "I'm from Barcelona," a rather wonderful act most will be unaware of. Elements of Barenakedladies and HelloGoodbye too. All respectable acts in their own right but not a template to base a steampunk band on.

Steampunk Funk Bizzare

"Non-traditional holiday favorites," is frankly weird. There seem to be too many of these steampunk themed christmas tunes. Appears to owe a debt to Nightmare Before Christmas. 3 out of 5 cogs.

Steam Punk Fairy with Orpheus#

A slightly dub female vocal take on Steampunk. Could almost be Chumbawamba or Radical Dance Faction at times.

Steampunkwilly

Steampunk Demo Mashup is just a set of sporadic mediocre covers. If you think it is cool to reference Britney it is scientificaly established that "Born to make you happy," is her one god song and wrecking Tom Petty has no defence.

Stellar Cellar

German alternative rock that have tagged themselves with as many things as they can think of to try and get listeners. Crap Goth frankly, but not dissimilar to lots of other bands I own just not as good.

Sugarland

A Platinum selling steampunk band.

Apparently when Sugarland announced they were going steampunk for their album "The Incredible Machine," in 2010 their usual fan base originally stayed away wary of what they might hear.

When it became apparent this American Country duo had reshaped their aesthetic rather than their sound the units started shifting at their usual rate.

I wouldn't necessarily have realised they were country but they are very listenable AOR.

Summa Riot

Quite good electronic industrial. Possibly the American alternative version of steampunk.

Sun and Shadows

nice and dark ambient with a bit of operatic vocals going on

Sunday Driver

Quite Roma folk with touches of Voltaire with a music hall warble backing it up

Surefire Project

Some kind of dystopian future concept album i think. Interesting but probably better tagged Cyberpunk than Steam.

Surt R

Dark ambient computer game music by their own admission. Suspect self tagging as steampunk was pushing it.

Sutton, Jameson

perfectly good instrumental prog with a hint of peril

Sweetchunks Band, the

Comedy American Country/Folk, "Bees," could be Neil Young singing Korky and the Juicepigs giving a nod to Tom Petty. From Southampton apparently with songs of a piratical theme that are rather more British folk in their approach- pretty fucking awesome

Synthetic Dream Foundation, the

Dancier ethereal tunes.
