Helping Steampunk decide what to sound like since 2017
the steam powered radio available from here
(ok so it's not strictly steam powered and not strictly a radio)
Jaine, Nikki
This is proper steampunk. On Projekt records one of my favourites. Dark cabaret with a bit of deliberately added crackle at times for that retro feel. Check out "of pigeons and other curiosities."
Jardin Mecanique
French Canadian vaudeville. Rather good.
Jessnes
Billing themselves as the Steamy Way of Folk, their violin and music box introduction sets out a very Jonathan Creek agenda. Try tocapture a fairly traditional folk feel.
Johnson Cory
Instrumental guitar based noodling. Possibly described as a more metal Ochre. "A Bell is Tolling," is more traditional sampletastic instrumental metal. Another contributer to the "Spectrum of Mana," compilation that despite its tag seems to be more concerned with instrumental prog than Steampunk- unless that is actually what steampunk sounds like. "The Wind Never Ceases," feels more like a straight metal instrumental. "Spirit of the Night," sadly not a Springsteen cover is a rather maudlin but actually probably legitimately steampunk instrumental. 3 cogs, check it out.
Johnstone, Nathaniel
Circulus meets Fleetwood Mac meets Steeleye Span with a hint of All About Eve. Also something else I can't put my finger on which makes me wonder whether I have seen another incarnation.
Johnstone, Nathaniel and the Brazilian Surf Mafia
Flamenco jazz
Joy, Catherine
listenable and folk tinged. Cogs not jumping out though
Juan Manuel Arroyo Alcón
a kind of musical pick n mix or perhaps decoupage
