Helping Steampunk decide what to sound like since 2017

the steam powered radio available from here

(ok so it's not strictly steam powered and not strictly a radio)

Gandalf's Fist

As one might expect from the name quite an 80s synthy prog kind of sound albeit with lots of mention of Cogs and Pistons. Reminds me I need to track back through the Jethro Tull back catalogue to pick out their steampunk premonitions of which there will undoubtably be several given the range of topics the recorded about.

Garin, Stephan

"Le Steampunk," starts off as a jolly gaelic number before going a bit freaked out and samply finishing with some nice solid music box and then a bit of Circulus esque joy. Feels like five tracks morphed into one. 3 and a half cogs

Ghelfi, Michael

This is most definitely what steampunk sounds like. Check it out. Swiss aparently.

Giant Paw

Quite synthy for steampunk before sounding like it might turn into "New Adventure's in Hi-Fi," REM before actually becoming Sex Gang Children so I guess I better award some cogs. 3 1/2?

Gin Rebellion, the aka The Uprising of the Gin Rebellion

From Atlanta Georgia, which obviously sets your expectations high. Sound like theatrical murder ballads but manage to get that nu-metal male/female crossover thing going on.

Giraffe

70s AOR drivetime rock type guitars with an oriental female vocal. Project linked to prolific Barrel D. Graves. Continues the steampunk giraffe theme if not musically significantly different from Graves' solo work and still not vert steampunk.

Gladstone

Hailing from Northampton and producing a pretty good stab at what Steampunk should sound like. 4 cogs

Glazer, J.B.

Live from Bromley Methodist Church is little more than controlled noise for the first 3 minutes, perfectly good controlled noise but I wasn't in the mood so turned it off. Not sure what happened for the next nine minutes.

Glue Ensemble, the

Not bad, get the impression they might like to be a Brtish Arcade Fire. You'd be impressed if you stumbled across them but perhaps not if you'd paid for tickets. Hints of Impakt though to be fair who i think are great.

Graves, Barrel D

Very rocky guitar with an almost Eurovision style female vocal albeit Japanese hailing from Tokyo. See to be very prolific, this is presumably Japanese Steampunk. Perhaps given they are so apparently futuristic they don't have to set themselves back quite so far to be time appropriate. Has quite a C86 feel to it which I am lead to understand was massive in Japan, I'm just unsure where the cogs fit in.

Gurdy Bird

I've always liked the sound of the Hurdy Gurdy and in fact my favourite Danish folk band use it to maximum effect, GurdyBird seems to evoke images of the Burlesque from the instrument. Live 2016 which is the band camp release available at name your price is quite piratical but very good.

GZK

French band. Quite a cabaret feel. Have teamed up with Professor Elemental on occasion. A bit hippety hop in delivery
