steam powered radio

Helping Steampunk decide what to sound like since 2017

the steam powered radio available from here

(ok so it's not strictly steam powered and not strictly a radio)

Faith in the Glitch

It's a bit unfair but I almost want to say steampunk Jive Bunny. Someone who is very good at splicing sources I suspect, samples flappers and beats. Imagine if Fatboy Slim had been given goggles rather than a bass for his 16th birthday. A Steampunk Edlewheis 4 cogs.

Fast Eddie

Quite atmospheric brooding and building

Feline and Strange

To be fair the following was written based on a brief listen on Bandcamp, "Might as well be Dreseden Dolls. That's not a bad thing." Saw them do a shortish set at Asylum 2017 and live their weirdness excelled with mainly vocals and an electric cello but sadly that hasn't fully transferred to their recent album "Out," which I think they said was a UK only release which is nice and maudlin but neither Dresden Dolls or overt weirdness.

Fiction, the

Funky American alt-rock... I just go on what they tag themselves as.

Fiechter, Derek and Brandon

Proper atmospheric concept album stuff

Fiesel, Christian and Hertz, Jack

Quite dark ambient but nice and atmospheric. Think there is some kind of steam train theme going on.

Fiffdimension

Slightly scratchy Americana with vocals that sort of remind me of Bob Geldoff. I suppose this is the Americn equivalent of our music hall revivalists. Although "Bush Fxxxs dogs is a rather less rootsy affair sounding more like a Play it Again Sam artist with the title repeated through a vocoder, I presume the ironic political message is just lost on a limey.

Filthy Spectacula, the

Greatest Steampunk band I've not quite seen possibly. Apparently they can be a bit choice and we did have children with us so a discrete retreat was probably best but picked up their CD on the way out and perfectly good Victorian rabble rousing drinking songs. Sleeve artwork has overtones of the Men... which lets hope isn't the beginning of a mono design as began to happen with Goth at the Sisters peak. Touches of early Voltaire at times particularly in the vocals.

Fitzgerald, Mishkin

Mishkin comes from Brighton I think and toured with Feline and Strange in the summer of 2018. One lady and an electric piano. Rather good.

Floorshow, the

I quite like this in the way I like mid-90s German Goth. No sight of goggles though

Flowing Rivers

Apparently the hobby project of a Mexican medical student. Given how prolific they are my advice would be don't get sick in Mexico. Perfectly good in a 16 bit computer game way mind

Flying Chivaus

another Jeeve's and Wooster 20s style act. Exactly what steampunk is about and worthry of being awarded cogs, teapots and cucumber candwiches as soon as i have worked out the rating system.

Flyr, Pierre, drommer&wodansohn

Atmospheric and French. Spacey and sci-fi

Forbiddenmath

Slightly wale song type ambient.

Frawley, Joe

Melancholic piano instrumentals that remind me of Ozymandias

Freak Fandango Orchestra, the

Imagine a jewish Voltaire providing the soundtrack to Jeeves and Wooster and you are about there. Check out "Wild Goats and Useless Heroes," on Bandcamp. At times there are hints of a swing Might Mighty Bosstones but sadly they don't make enough of that particular string of their bow.

Free Concentric, the

This is kind of what Steampunk sounds like. Lo-fi broken Americana. Bits of clock work, Fucked up automiton? A bit avant garde noise meets Dresden Dolls. 3 out of 5 cogs.

Frenchy and the Punk

Sounds like Voltaire at his uninspired end of the spectrum. Has a bit of a "Princess and the Frog," feel to it. Wouldn't rush out to see them live.

Fyrce Muons

I rather like these, dark and brooding
