Helping Steampunk decide what to sound like since 2017
the steam powered radio available from here
(ok so it's not strictly steam powered and not strictly a radio)
D'Andrea, Francesco
Exactly what steampunk sounds like. They can have all of the cogs in the world.
Dark Design
"Trip to Mars,"
Dark Sinfonia
good old fashioned apocalyptic folk. How do we cope without World Serpent? Feels like a bit of a CS Lewis feel.
Dataphiles
A very good take on electro-swing. The project attempts to fuhe Steampunk and Cyberpunk. They've done a handful of EPs but I suspect Steampunk Cybercrunk is their one dalliance with cogs.
Daydream Anatomy
This is what steam punk ought to sound like if it has synths, sequencers and samplers
Deadly Nightshade Botanical Society
Best name I've come across since the inception of t'radio but they are clearly a traditional 90s female fronted Goth band even if they do try and crunch the vocals a little to give the distressed aged sound. I'd happily buy a CD mind if one existed.
Death Itself
Nice music box introduction. Suitably sinister. The track is "Padora's Box," presumably her musical box.
Demartin, Damon
Nice ethereal folk
Demonstrey and Friends
Another Prog, Synth, Metal number. If there were a few samples about airships I'd be more comfortable letting this in but to be fair the vibe does conjur up the right images.
Denney Joints
Bad Seeds/Crime and City Solution kind of vibes. Scott Walker is clearly in the background as well.
Der Doktor
I like the vibe of Manege Frey. Definitely worth rebooking. "Seltsame Geschichten," is a little bit Nick Cavey if he was central European. Sadly "Alice," sounds more like the Smokey version than Sisters... but not too much.
DerrickWasHere
"Steampunk," is quite a nice instrumental groove got a bit of an industrial (revolution) type of rhythm and a slightly scratchy sound that gives the impression of being recorded onto a wax cylinder.
Derris-Kharlan
Computer game music
Descendants of Erdrick & Jameson Sutton
"Star of Darkness," is another noodly metal instrumental gifted in the name of steampunk.
Destroy Nate Allen
Crap Barenaked Ladies inspired americana. Mediocre country.
Devil's Carnival, the
A bit vauderville, a little bit stompy
Dirt Floor Band, the
Definitely one from the alt-country stable
DJ Buzz Killington
Quite a Public Sector Broadcasting feel. Goes a bit electro-swing in places.
Dolmen
sort of eastern european metal meets music box and dance music. Could this be the sound of steampunk? Possibly heavily edited. Well worth a listen though.
Dork Forest
an interview with Jackie Kashian being interviewed about some event she was at! or you can pay for the hour long show
Drat
"Hold you head up high," would probably get away with masquerading as Apocalyptic Folk albeit at the Americana end of things.
Dreamwalkers AZ
A pagan ritual type thing. Quite listenable though
Drew Crow Star
Appears to turn his hand to a whole host of genres so not sure how many airships or cogs came up in the tracks I listened to but all very well done
Dr. Carmila
Very gypsy folk vibe at times with dark ambient undercurrents.
Dr Malice and the Absinthetic Orchestra
"Happy Toymas," is an alternative festive narrative whih tries for a vicorian feel with modern instruments but is probably best described as mediocre cabaret. I have to still say worth a listen.
Dr Manhattan
Quite complex sounding prog rock.
Drunk Lick and the Cheap Bastards
"Steampunk," is Bad Religion in goggles
