steam powered radio

Helping Steampunk decide what to sound like since 2017

the steam powered radio available from here

(ok so it's not strictly steam powered and not strictly a radio)

Cage of Crows

semi-ambient ethereal with female vocals. A bit Nick Cave murder ballads with elements of Siouxsie.

Calefaction, the

I'm sort of reminded of U2 and John Hughes soundtracks in places more early 90s alternative US rock in others.

Captain Cuppa T and the Zeppelin Crew

Have nailed Spiv Casual. More Jeeves and Wooster than Blackadder's Christmas Carol but very good. Where else would you find a George Fornby tribute to HG Wells.

Captain of the Lost Waves

Imagine Graham Norton dressed like a ringmaster. One of only a handful of SP acts I have seen live. I think it is fair to say easily distracted. He only managed 2 songs in the half hour set we saw but one of them "Grand National," is the funniest song Show of Hands never wrote. Quite folky and troubadouresque. Hidden Gems Chapter 1 is well worth a punt for a tenner.

As a stop gap before Hidden Gems 2 the Captain released a rather ace tin based CD, "Synthesis," in effect a mini album if you overlook the 3 versions of "Uniforms," and 3 tracks appear on HGC1 although i think they are different versions. Gems Chapter 2 followed on where Chapter one left off including live favourite "Berlin between the wars."

The Captain has become our lockdown savior with his regular live streams keeping us sane on a Wednesday evening.

Cardiofluxus

"City of Wolves," feels like found sounds with an almost trip hop overlay-

Careless Gorodetsky

One of those Jewish wedding music outfits that seem to gravitate to steampunk

Caruana, Tom

A near perfect mix of eectro swing, vinyl crackle and part of the Professor Elemental ouvre

Cassettes, the

"I've been gone far too long," is lo-fi stoned americana but they are pretty prolific so who knows what else they are producing. Not bad as it goes.

Cat's Eyelash

Interesting musical mix. Feels later c20 but done well.

Cauda Pavonis

To probably misquote Alexi Sayle in the Young Ones, "I lnew these when they were a clog dancing trio from Barnsley." CP are one of a handful of bands to appear on both Gothapedia and Steampoweredradio. I'm not sure if they have changed their sound or bought some goggles but CP are now tagging much of their ouvre as Steampunk on bandcamp. We've just relistened to "Pistols at Dawn," their 2000 release and there's not a cog in sight although the odd hint of music hall. They were definitely a Goth band then though.

They do seem to have developed their sound in the last 15 years or so to be fair and do sound more kind of how you might imagine a Goth band going steampunk might.

Chap, Sabrina

Perfectly listenable cabaret with a hint of Dresden Dolls.

Cheat You Fair

Sound like a country Barenaked Ladies

Churn Milk Joan

There's a slightly funky Crime and the City Solution going on reunited with Nick Cave on vocals. Touches of SGCs Eastern fare.

Circadian Frequency

The Mythos EP (vol 2) has a hint of the wacca wacca funk about it and hints of reggae in an early 90s alternative sort of way

Circus Contraption

Kind of how you might expect them to sound in a kind of comedy Gothic music hall kind of way

Clockwork Dolls

Upbeat dark folk

Clockwork Faerie, the

Very good folky ethereal. 3 cogs

Cogkneys, the

shit, neither big clever nor funny. A piss poor attempt at comedy electro swing. To be fair live they aren't even electro swing, or funny.

Colloseum Thesis

Music box prog metal. 4 cogs. Quite possibly a prog-cog opera.

Contre Jour

This French band remind me of one of my favourite Franch acts of all time Derriere le Mirreur. Bizarelly don't tag themselves Goth but some genres I've never heard of. Nothing to make me think cogs but they are pretty ace.

Cooke, LM

"Poor Jenny," is seafairing folk, "Yellow Eyes," is a bit more pub space rock with tinges of pyshcadelia.

Corvid Canine

Quite creepy soundng and quite nasty. Unnecesarily shouty vocals over admitedly quite nice riffing.

Creature Feature

Munsters style garage rock mixed with up tempo gypsy folk music

Crimson Muddle

Out of date Electro. If Tesla has synths fair enough.

CtesibiusCrew

Proper French steampunk (I presume.) Quite noisy but fun nonetheless

Curious Sound of J. Anthony Duffield, the

mediocre accordian fare.
