steam powered radio

Helping Steampunk decide what to sound like since 2017

the steam powered radio available from here

(ok so it's not strictly steam powered and not strictly a radio)

Babylon Squeak

I'm most immediately reminded of Ian Dury and a bit of TV Personalities sensibilities.

Bad September

Understated but rather good. Lots of good steam punk themes, imagine a more musical less potty mouthed Men Who Would... Plenty of cogs

Bad Things, the

Gypsy music hall. Part of the Cult Seattle Cabaret scene. I don't recall that ever coming up in Frasier. Not too bad though perhaps 2 1/2 to 3 cogs

Bakelite 78

A little music hall and as with many of these acts a little Dresden Dolls, but a little lighter in tone. 2Aurora Ave Motel," owes quite a debt to "if I had a $1,000,000," by the Barenaked Ladies.

Banner, Daryl

Ambient soundtrack music that accompanies a book apparently. Nice though.

Baritone, Juke

20s sounding New Orleans jazz. I'm sure it is good at what it is. Quite funky and elements of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones with Disney princess and the frog overtones.

Bartmann John

"Royalty-free Electroswing and Nu Jazz vol 2," is exactly what it sounds like it should. John is a completely ungoggled type but is a very nice man for putting his tunes out for free for others to use in projects.

Bastard Sunz, the

Lots of songs with Bastard in the title and littered throughout the lyrics but in a steampunk rap style. Not sure I actually recommend it though.

Bat Country

A bit alt-country American Gothic or could be the house band for Disney’s "Frog Prince."

Beans

Cure inspired alt-pop. Not sure where goggles or cogs fit in.

Bedroom Wounds

very dark sounding. Would definitely make it into Gothapedia. Almost feels like a bit of my beloved Long March.

Bella Koshka

Dark folk with breathy female vocals. Rather good.

Birthrite

Cabaret punk from the region that brought you Neds, PWEI and Black Sabbath

Blackbird Orchestra

Breathy atmospheric almost Gothic with a touch of Marillion and a sprinkling of Radiohead

Black Steampunk

not particularly good hipety hop rapping

Black Tape For a Blue Girl

Not sure I would have expected to include this lot on here but they feature on “A Sepia Chord Passport,” one of the few steampunk compilations to make it into the shops so are entitled to inclusion. Still, Black Tape’s Sam owns the label that put the  out the album so if you can’t try and shift a few of your own units as part of the deal what can you do. To be fair “Rotten Zurich Cafe,” fits in quite well in a Dresden Dolls kind of way.

Black Wreck Music Project, the

Quite droney folk.

Blarz

"The Morrow Lost, OST," is rather nice instrumental soundscapes with a 19th Century if not earlier feel. Very nice to listen to and as usual available from Bandcamp.

Bloodtub Orchestra, the

Comedy music hall meets punk rock noise which is probably what steampunk should be. Monty Python meet the Pistols!

Bookshop Band, the

Very Guardian friendly- somgs inspired by books played in bokshops. Perfectly nice twee folk. "Curious and Curiouser," is not a bad attempt at capturing Alice's adventures but "White Rabbit," it aint.

Boudreault, Derek C

Sci-fi vaudeville? "There's a Wookie in my Bathroom," is noisy but quite music hally and could almost come from the Muppets Star Wars episode. "A Bolshevikn Stormtrooper," is rather more trad grunty metal. I usually tolerate anything mildly Star Wars themed but even I am struggling with the latter track.

Brandon, Alexander

A little bit Tull a little bit Marrilion, very soft prog.

Brinkworth, David and the Pit

Sounds very Nick Cave albeit with a bit of a Victorian twinge. Alright.

Budda Cakes, the

Slightly sea shanty feel meets gypsy folk with a bit of a Byrds harmony feel. Very good.
